March brings events in music, graphic design and theatre, as well as an alumni lecture, to Susquehanna University’s campus.
Guest pianist to present recital
Pianist Réne Lecuona will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, in Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music and Art.
Lecuona is a professor of piano at the University of Iowa. She earned her doctorate in piano performance and was awarded a performer’s certificate at the Eastman School of Music. She received undergraduate and master’s degrees at the Indiana University School of Music.
The Department of Music hosts nearly 60 events a year, including a robust schedule of ensemble concerts, student recitals, faculty recitals, guest artist series and more.
Senior Graphic Design and Studio Art Majors Exhibition opens at gallery
The Lore Degenstein Gallery will host an opening reception for the annual Senior Graphic Design and Studio Art Majors Exhibition at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 15, in the gallery in the Charles B. Degenstein Campus Center.
The exhibition runs through April 28.
This year’s exhibition is titled Ouroboros, which evokes the ancient image of a snake eating its own tail. While the ouroboros symbol generally symbolizes eternity or cosmic harmony, it is applied here to signify art’s continual evolution and progress.
This annual exhibition showcases the accomplishments of Susquehanna University’s graduating graphic design and studio art majors.
Alum to present lecture on criminal punishment
Jeffery Ulmer ’88 will present the lecture Criminal Punishment as An Inhabited Institution at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, in Isaacs Auditorium in Seibert Hall.
Ulmer graduated from Susquehanna with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. He went on to earn a master’s degree and doctorate in sociology from the Pennsylvania State University, where he now serves as distinguished professor of sociology and criminology and director of the Criminal Justice Research Center. His research interests span the sociology of criminal punishment, criminological theory, religion and crime, and racial/ethnic inequality and violence rates.
This event is sponsored by Susquehanna’s Arlin M. Adams Center for Law and Society.
Theatre to present play based on Lizzie Borden
The Department of Theatre will present the play Blood Relations by Sharon Pollock at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 28, and Saturday, March 29, and at 2: 30 p.m. Sunday, March 30, in the Degenstein Center Theater in the Charles B. Degenstein Campus Center.
Pollock’s play coyly explores the whys and wherefores of the 1892 double murder of the Bordens in her psychological exploration of their daughter — the woman who was Lizzie Borden.
